My Chantix wean story

Unhooked, there is a good joke poster made by Dispair Inc. It says, " If You're not Part of the Solution, There is Good Money to be Made in Prolonging the Problem." There has been a lot of discussion about this drug here, the starting, the dosage, the side effects, the stopping. A common & kind of scary theme, is doctors don't seem to know much about it! :8o: How many people now have said they had to go on the internet to find information? That's disgraceful & I think it goes to show how nicotine addiction is not taken seriously. I don't think the medical profession takes such a cavalier attitude towards heroin addiction or alcoholism, that your doctor would say, "well you go see what you find on the net & let me know". I think there is still a prevalent attitude of "well, just quit, you big whiny wimp". Champix (same thing) has been recently approved in Canada, Keith, & our government health insurance doesn't cover it either. But I have to say I chuckled when I read your post because all of our US Chantix users are for sure saying "what is this government health coverage of which you speak?" It's nauseating to see the government promote a smoke-free Canada but not lift a finger or spend a dime of the sin tax they collect, to make it happen in any way. It's equally nauseating to see all the scary "don't smoke or you will die" posters in the doctor's office & not be able to get one bit of useful information or support out of that doctor. Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! It's good to "see" you all. I too found whole websites where people were having lots of problems with abruptly stopping the Chantix, that's why I did the wean. For me at least it worked well. It's totally amazing to be free - from nicotine and from any other type of drugs. I feel like a bird who has been caged and then set free. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 64 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,088 Amount Saved: $256.00 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 6 Mins: 33 Seconds: 1

Sounds freaky ! The powers that be have just introduced 'Champix' (same as the US 'Chantix' but a different name) here in NZ, was on the news last night. Theres one small problem though - it's not funded by our government. It will cost an average smoker $600 to run the full course of treatment ! :8o: this doesn't look to encouraging for any smoker living here. kiwi since chantix targets brain receptors that in turn target dopamine receptors, I, for one, was afraid how i would react to the abrupt change. I'm not sure where everyone else is coming from, but I suspect that others dont want to mess up a good quit. it is so new that there isnt much guidance on it. The recommended course is 12 weeks, with an additional 12 weeks "if needed", whatever that means. Cindy I bumped up another thread about this issue...lots of different approaches and experiences...Called Weaning off Chantix/Halfing the dosage -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 134 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,360 Amount Saved: $911.20 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 18 Mins: 12 Seconds: 56

Cindy, I had issues sleeping, headaches, very very low tolerance - snappy, crabby, etc.....I thought I was coping well until I was sent home from work to rest. I slept, read, and felt better. I was concerned enough to go to the DR, who merely handed me an anti-depressant and 2 types of sleeping pills. I ran the stats on those and saw the side affects and addictive properties and called my DR back and said I am not taking these, I just got off chantix and I think all this is because I didn't wean. I googled and found entire websites of people in pain that did not wean, same symptoms as me. I called my DR and told her this, she concurred, for me, it was not wise to add more meds to the mix. I am fine now, my issues lasted 2-3 weeks. I worked with my DR the whole time and that is the best advise, every one is different. My DH was pretty much fine, and I hope you will be also. But if I had to do it over I would wean.
