Hi everyone,
Thank you for the kind words and advice. I really enjoy using the discussion board, because I feel as though I am never alone. Thank you, Diva, for reminding me that I need to be kind to myself and that I'm "sick". I didn't really see it that way. But I know that I would have been kinder to myself if I have the flu, so I'm trying to look at it that way. Thanks to Lorlee for reminding me that I can use substitutions to my normal ways of stress relief like deep breathing and meditation. I usually do progressive relaxation, but right now, tensing certain parts of my body would not be good! But you're right-there are other ways to go about it. Finally, thanks to Casey for reminding me to focus on my back to work plan. There is already a plan in place, but I have been avoiding putting much thought into it (which is probably just causing me to be more anxious!!). I think I will try doing some visualization in preparation for next week when I return to work.
Again, thank you to everyone who responded. Having the discussion board and a connection to people in similar situations is such a great source of support in my life. Diva, hope you are being equally kind to yourself and get better soon. :-)
Hi kittcat,
Just wondering how you are doing?
Hope your back is feeling better! It can be very frustrating when you are not able to incorporate your usual successful coping mechanisms.
Let us know how your work plans are going. As stressful as this is, being prepared and having a plan in place may help you through.
Casey

Kittcat6166,
This is a great time for you to find some other coping techniques that are not so physically active (maybe reading or sewing). Something that can help distract your thoughts but isn't so challenging physically. You can also take advantage of this time to get yourself really well prepared for work and start to picture yourself back in the office.
If you are really feeling in need of some physical activity you could always try to go for a little swim. Because it is such low impact sometimes it doesn't affect injuries so much. You can just float and do some slow movements through the water.

Hiya Kittcat!
Voy can I ever relate! I developped an inner ear infection so for the last few days, I have felt like I am on a boat on a stormy day. Every thing keeps spinning...So I can't do a lot of the stuff I usually do to make myself feel better, like going for a nice long walk. Heck I have trouble walking to the bathroom without holding on to things... But I find that as Lorlee said, if I am kind to myself and give myself the right to just be sick and just watch tv and read and surf the net I feel a lot less anxious. It is hard sometimes to cut oneself some slack but I agree with Lorlee, be kind to yourself and let yourself have whatever distraction helps until you mend :)

Hi Kittcat,
Sounds like you need to be a little kinder to yourself. An injury can change your routine which we know for people like us is hard to take. I think you need to recognize that it is ok to surf the net and do whatever it takes to get your mind off things.
Are you doing any of the exercises on the site? I find meditation even 5 minutes a day is a great stress reliever. Deep breathing helps me to re-focus too.
This too shall pass it always does.
Take care.

That's too bad about your back. Use your down time to really challenge your thoughts and figure out some not physical coping activites (maybe reading or sewing). Get yourself prepared to go back to work. Make sure that everything is in order so you can relax for the rest of the week.
If you really feel like you need to move, you could always try swimming. Because it is so low impact, it may not hurt your back if you just float and move around a little bit in the water.

Hi everyone,
I'm having a really hard time right now. I hurt my back (somehow). It started painfully spasming on Sunday and I couldn't move the whole day. I am now walking, but have to be really careful about day to day moving such as twisting and bending. As a result, my routine has been interrupted. I can't do what I did before. Some of my major stress busters (going to the gym, doing household chores) are not possible right now. I am feeling useless and tearful. This is a big deal, because it felt so good to be able to do those things. So now I'm sitting here surfing the net, watching too much TV and overeating. To top it off, I am returning to work next week, which is a major stressor for me. HELP!!!
