Getting Back into the World

Hi, Melinda. Part of behavioral change involves taking baby steps to bring about change. You've heard the saying "Just get over it"? Well as you know, this is an empty suggestion. Panic sufferers just can't do it like that. Instead, as described and helped to do in the Panic Program, people work through their fear by taking baby steps to achieve a goal, and challenging their thoughts as they go along. It's broken down into workable objectives. For instance, if a person is totally afraid of driving, a first step might be to just sit in the car for a little while each day, until becoming almost bored with it. Then perhaps that person can take another little step of then driving in the driveway, then another step of driving on the street in front of the house, slowly moving towards the ultimate goal of driving to the store, or to work, or on the highway.

Hi again, Chachi. In reviewing you post again, this stands out: "I've practiced the exercises and have been working on my panic for about 6 weeks. I have been out of the loop for a total of about 5 months now and I don't know what my next step should be?" The exercises take 12 weeks to do. Since it's one step at a time, perhaps the group could help you with the next step if you would like to name or share the other steps you took to where you are now?

Hi Chachi. In your post you are defining the excess, you're finding the boundary you wish to set for yourself. You don't want 12 hours, but how many do you think you can do? Why would a return to work entail 12 hour days? Are you planning to return to the same employment as you had before, or are you looking for another job that is less demanding?

I've practiced the exercises and have been working on my panic for about 6 weeks. I have been out of the loop for a total of about 5 months now and I don't know what my next step should be? I don't want to go back to my old routine of working 12 hours a day and running around town. It got me in this position in the first place. My problem is I want to get back out there, but I'm afraid of overwhelming myself, because I don't know if I have the concentration and focus to work.
